The Garden of the "Other" in Metaxourgio

The Design Thesis focuses on the possibility of maintaining the current social structure in the area of Metaxourgio, but also creating a new public space for the region, which will promote and strengthen its multicultural characteristics.

The idea of the project is that religion could unite the three different religious groups, Orthodoxs, Muslims and Buddhists, living currently in the area. Religion is a shelter for people who are afraid of the unknown, who are grieving and for people looking for hope. Considering this, we aim in bringing together the residents to pray together in different buildings, which while maintaining their own identity, will be united with a common garden, representing the “Garden of Eden” from the Bible.
Under the garden there is a library, which represents the “tree of knowledge”.

The three different religious groups already coexist in the region. Our goal is to help them communicate and learn for each other. Furthermore, creating a strong religion landmark in the area, will reinforce the immigrants’ identity and help them blend peacefully and easily with the existing population.
